Art-Tech Academy Meeting Minutes
Art Tech Meeting Notes 5.14.09
SCR DATA:
We Finished!!! All three sets of data have been compiled from the teachers who participated in the data collection and we are able to see areas of growth throughout the year concerning our Short Constructed Responses.
The third set of results has shown the greatest improvement over all. For this set of SCRs we applied the use of Flow Maps for student planning and the results show that they are extremely helpful in insuring the students hit all six parts of the SCR.
Art Tech Meeting Notes 5.05.09
THINKING MAPS:
Shared ideas of how these can be implemented in our classrooms as tools to enhance our subjects
These will be a central focus for next year.
PDU credit:
Finish self reflection paper by Friday for after school meeting.
****NEXT WEEK: SCR DATA:
SCR #3-
For the third and final SCR in our Data set, the group has decided on a common strategy to implement prior to the students writing.
Using a Flow Map as an organizational tool to insure they have all parts of the SCR
Ex.
Topic ----------->Detail/Explain-------------->Detail/Explain----------------->Conclusion
***Suggestion- use this method as a class and go through an SCR together in reinforce what is expected and what is quality
THIS DATA WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETED AND COMPILED BY Tuesday MAY 13, 2009 (the data can be in the same format as the first two and simply graded on the four point scale. We will look at our results to determine the effectiveness of our strategy, but do not need to grade the flow map and include those scores in the data)
Art Tech Meeting Notes 3.27.09
SCR DATA:
SCR data from two sets of testing compiled and assessed for common needs
*Thanks to all who came prepared with their data
SCR #3-

THINKING MAPS:
How can we implement these next year as a team/department?
How can we use these CREATIVELY to enhance our discipline?
How can we use Thinking Maps for data - How would we measure them?
***Next Week***
Come prepared with an idea of how one of the thinking maps can be used creatively in your class.
Art Tech Meeting Notes 3.14.09
Professional Development: Tara Avila
"Elements of Sentence Construction"
Informational session concerning sentence structure - Instructional ideas for how to assist our students in improving their technical writing.
Data Focus for Next Year:
Ideas: Focus on technical writing - One sentence at a time.
- Instead of diving into large writing assignments, we can focus on shorter more concise pieces of writing to ensure accuracy and fluency.
SCR Data
- Continue to use the four point rubric - Lets finish our instruction of the SCR so we can compile some real data to look at!
Step One: Everyone should have their first SCR from one class graded and results recorded in an XCEL spreadsheet
Step Two: After grading, hand back first SCR to students and discuss what parts were missing and what needs to be improved.
Step Three: After students have an understanding of what they missed in the second SCR give students a new prompt and have them write the second.
Step Four: Grade on four point rubric and compile data in XCEL
After looking at our data, we can discuss what strategies we used between the two SCRs to improve the students' performance. At that point, we can decide as a group which common strategy we will use for the thrid SCR.
***Next Week***
Come prepared with two SCR sets from one class, graded on the four point rubric.

Art Tech Meeting 2.10.09
Choice Of Studies:
RECRUIT STUDENTS!!!!!
- It is extremely important that we "sell" our classes to our students to ensure that they fill up. Students do not make decisions until April, but we should begin talking to them about available courses now.
- Recruiting Current Students- Inviting students who have shown excellence in your class to sign up for the next level
- Cross Recruiting- Suggesting our students take other art classes taught by other teachers...Example: Mr. Stroh suggests that a student who has shown skill in creativity, but lacks in technical computer programing skills, takes Intro to Art or Beginning Ceramics, etc.
- Off Site Recruiting- Possibly setting up a time where we go in groups to our feeder junior highs...4th period/5th period/lunch time slot would solve the substitute issue. We could possibly take some of our students as spokes persons.
SCR DATA GOALS:
Again, the SCR is a tool the students can use to articulate them in writing but they will never be asked to write and "SCR" in another life setting. Be sure to communicate this to students.
Be sure to lay out SCR expectations every time students are writing them...even explain the 4 point rubric for clarification.
Provide clear prompts.
February 24th: Come prepared with one class set of SCRs graded on the 4 point rubric and data recorded on Xcel spread sheet (will be emailed out by Mr. Morgan shortly)
TEAM TEACHING:
Some assignments need to be redistributed because there are too many teachers in one class.
Timeliness and communicated expectations is important in both roles of the class room teacher and the guest teachers.
As guest teachers, it is helpful to know what is expected from us individually as well as what the daily lesson entails.
- Premeditated Grouping is important...how can students be grouped most effectively?
- How can team teaching enrich the groups?
***Next Tuesday- NO meeting
***Tuesday February 24th: Meet in Mr. Stroh's room (009) with SCR Data completed
Art Tech Meeting 2.3.09
Stephanie Dater:
Continued facilitation of concerning SCR instruction- discussing Multi-Task SCR prompts as well as what to specifically focus on concerning SCRs.
The SCR is a tool for the students to use in any writing situation throughout their life that will allow them to effectively communicate.
-Style, Content, Organization and Language Usuage are all possible options
CONCENTRATION:
The 1-4 pt rubric and the data that aligns with it will be our focus.
- Prompts must be clear
- SCR format must be given as the expectation
SCR FORMAT: 4 Points Total
Thesis/Topic Sentence (1 point)
Detail and explanation (1 point)
Detail and explanation (1 point)
Conclusion (1 point)
****Tuesday February 24th (we agreed on Tuesday the 17th but it is a work day so we will not be meeting,so hopefully the following Tuesday is alright.)
Bring 4pt rubric graded SCRs from ONE class along with the results in the data forms found on the shared drive.
NEXT TUESDAY: Meet in Mike Stroh's room 009
Art Tech Meeting 1.27.09
Stephanie Dater:
Spoke with team about writing expectations and how we are supposed to be implementing them in our own classrooms.
SCR: We will continue to work as a team in assigning SCR's in the form of Artist Statements.
Key Words in Writing Prompts:
Be sure to use the Key Words in order to maintain continuity between tests and assignments.
examples of such words are: analyze, compare, contrast, evaluate, justify, develop, etc. (more to be found in the shared folder)
-- Communicate the connections between the writing in English class, your class and the standardized tests students take-- It is not a secret!
-- Make writing assignments RELEVANT to the students: allow them to make connections.
Multi-Task SCR:
This semester we need to focus on pushing the depth of our SCR prompts
Example-
"Consider the similarities and differences between chapter one of The Kite Runner and chapter one of The Poisonwood Bible. Although the two are very different, both use figurative language and both embody a similar tone. Using the SCR format, construct a response explaining and supporting these facts"
***NEXT WEEK***Everyone needs to bring their own example of a Multi-Task SCR Prompt to the meeting.****
PDU:
Professional Development Portfolios/notebook/binder
***This will need to be a record of all things done over the year that prove we have met the PDU requirements.
Look at Metty's website for examples...More clarification to follow
**NEXT WEEK***
Meet in Avila's Room 008
*** BRING MULTI-TASK SCR PROMPT EXAMPLE***

These are what district administrators expect to see...
1) Fidelity to core curriculum and improved instructional practice.
2) Implementation of assessment and data analysis strategies to drive student achievement.
3) Utilization of the School Improvement Plan as a roadmap for all school initiatives and reforms.
Course Catalog:
We're rewriting the 2005/2006 course catalog (the last school year that Montbello had one) to have a more current and viable choice of studies program.
This is an opportunity to declare your preps for next year. For the most part, any course in the existing course catalog, or currently in IC is fair game. Don't worry about the number of sections offered, or periods offered at this point.
The new catalog must be completed and submitted to Counseling for printing by Friday, February 13th.
Catalog listings are in this format:
Course Title: Try to use the same title that shows up in IC
Prerequisites: List any course titles required before this one, if applicable
Course Length: Generally one semester or one year
Credits: Generally 5 or 10
Grade: Grade levels accepted (be flexible)
Fee: Course fee, if applicable
Description: Try to keep it around 50-75 words
Next week:
We will meet in Tara Avila's room (008) from 9:15-10:15. Part of the meeting will be spent typing and formatting the catalog. |
